Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)

What is an air source heat pump (ASHP) and how does it work?

An ASHP is a heating and cooling system that transfers heat between your home and the outside air. It extracts heat from the outdoors and transfers it indoors all year round for heating.

How efficient are air source heat pumps?

ASHPs are highly efficient, especially in moderate climates. They can produce up to four times more heat energy than the electrical energy they consume, often calculated at 300-400% efficiency.

Will an ASHP increase my electricity bills?

While ASHPs do require electricity to operate, they produce more energy than they use, they are highly efficient (300-400%) and can significantly reduce heating costs compared to traditional heating systems.

Do ASHPs reduce carbon emissions?

Yes, ASHPs produce significantly fewer carbon emissions compared to traditional heating systems, as they utilize renewable energy from the air rather than burning fossil fuels.

Are ASHPs suitable for cold climates?

Yes, modern ASHPs are designed to operate efficiently in cold climates. They can extract enough heat from the air even when temperatures drop below freezing, ensuring design temperatures are still met.

How long does an ASHP installation take?

Installation time varies depending on factors such as the size of your home, the complexity of the installation, and whether any existing systems need to be removed. On average, installation can take three to seven days.

What maintenance does an ASHP require?

Regular maintenance is essential to keep your ASHP running efficiently and warranty eligibility. Tasks include cleaning or replacing air filters, checking refrigerant levels, and scheduling annual inspections by a qualified technician.

What is the lifespan of an ASHP?

With proper maintenance, an ASHP can last between 15 to 20 years or more. The lifespan can vary depending on factors such as usage, environmental conditions, quality of installation, and regular maintenance.

What size ASHP do I need for my home?

The size of the ASHP required depends on factors such as the size of your home, insulation levels, climate, and desired comfort levels. A professional installer can generate a heat loss calculation to determine the appropriate size for your home

Do ASHPs require planning permission for installation?

In most cases, ASHP installations do not require planning permission, but it's always a good idea to check local regulations and building codes before proceeding with installation. If your home is listed we would advise you to seek guidance from the local council.

Do ASHPs make a lot of noise?

Modern ASHPs are designed to operate quietly, operation, around 60db, this is the equivalent of a normal conversation. Proper installation and maintenance can help minimize noise level.

System Protection

We ensure that your new system is equipped with state-of-the-art chemicals and filtration mechanisms to minimize corrosion and magnetite buildup within the system. Our advanced treatment solutions effectively maintain the integrity of your heating system by preventing the accumulation of harmful deposits and prolonging its operational lifespan. In addition to corrosion inhibitors and scale inhibitors, we utilize specific biocides to inhibit the growth of algae and other microorganisms. These biocides are carefully selected to prevent biofilm formation and maintain the cleanliness of your system. Furthermore, we monitor and regulate the pH levels of the water to ensure optimal conditions for system performance and longevity.

External Insulation System

We prioritise the use of the most effective insulation solutions for the external pipework of your system. This ensures minimal heat loss and provides protection against weather conditions and corrosion. Our insulation methods are carefully selected to provide optimal thermal efficiency, reducing energy consumption and ensuring consistent performance of your heating system. Additionally, our insulation materials are weather-resistant and corrosion-resistant, safeguarding the pipework from environmental elements and prolonging its lifespan. By implementing high-quality insulation, we not only maximize the energy efficiency of your heating system but also enhance its durability and reliability, ultimately contributing to long-term cost savings and improved comfort within your property.

Stable and Level Base

During our site visit, we'll assess the most suitable base for your property based on the location of the heat pump. We typically offer two options: above soft ground or above solid ground. In cases where the ground is level, a base may not be necessary. However, if the proposed location is uneven, it's essential to lay a level foundation to ensure proper installation and operation of the heat pump. If soft ground is present, we can install a decorative base using gravel and paving slabs. This not only provides a stable foundation but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of the installation area. Our goal is to ensure that the heat pump is securely positioned and that the surrounding environment is both functional and visually pleasing.

Frost Protection

We prioritise the safety and reliability of your heating system by incorporating anti-freeze protection into all our installations. Anti-freeze valves play a crucial role in safeguarding your system against the risk of frozen pipework, especially during colder temperatures or in regions prone to freezing conditions. These anti-freeze valves are essential components that prevent the water in your heating system from freezing, which can lead to costly damage and disruptions in service. By automatically releasing pressure and allowing for the expansion of water as it freezes, these valves help prevent burst pipes and other related issues. Our commitment to anti-freeze protection ensures that your heating system remains operational and protected, even in the harshest of weather conditions. With anti-freeze valves in place, you can have confidence in the reliability and resilience of your heating system year-round.

Material Delivery

You can expect the materials for your installation to arrive at your address on the morning of the scheduled installation. We strive to ensure timely delivery to facilitate a smooth and efficient installation process. If you have any specific delivery requirements or concerns, please feel free to let us know, and we'll do our best to accommodate them.

Duration Without Hot Water

We understand the importance of uninterrupted access to hot water, which is why we aim to minimize any inconvenience during the installation process. Rest assured that you will only be without hot water for a maximum of 24 hours while we complete the installation. Our team works efficiently to ensure that the disruption to your daily routine is kept to a minimum. If you have any concerns or special requirements regarding this timeframe, please don't hesitate to let us know, and we'll do our best to accommodate your needs.

Heating Interruption

We understand that replacing your heating system can temporarily disrupt your comfort, which is why we're prepared to provide alternative heating solutions during the installation process. If your current heating system needs to be removed to install new radiators, rest assured that we will supply electrical heaters for the duration of the installation. These heaters will ensure that you remain comfortable and warm while we work on upgrading your heating system. Our goal is to minimize any inconvenience and ensure a seamless transition to your new and improved heating setup. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us.

Suitability of Heat Pump

After conducting thorough calculations of your property's heat demand, we're pleased to confirm that an air source heat pump (ASHP) is well-suited to meet your heating requirements. We understand the importance of transparency and are happy to provide you with detailed heat calculations and estimated annual usage figures for your reference. These insights will give you a clear understanding of how the ASHP will perform in your specific environment and help you make informed decisions regarding your heating system. If you have any further questions or would like to discuss the findings in more detail, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Choice of Locations

During the site survey, you'll have the opportunity to express your preferences regarding the locations of key components such as the air source heat pump (ASHP), hot water cylinder, and new radiators. We understand that every home is unique, and we value your input in determining the most suitable placement for these elements.

Warranty Coverage

The heat pump comes with a 7-year parts and labor warranty, while the hot water cylinder has a 25-year warranty for the internal stainless steel core. Ancillaries installed on the cylinder come with a 1-year guarantee to ensure you're covered. Remember, it's important to have the system serviced every 12 months to maintain warranty validity.
